The colours of Indian Television

Indian Television, today, has myriads of colours to offer to its viewers, unlike the two decade old black and white glimpses. It is no longer an idiot box in itself, but a treasured box which is religiously married to every Indian household. Treasured because it has become indispensable to poor, bourgeoisie and rich equally.

I will, perhaps, fail to count the innumerable dishes of channels that are served under DTH banners ‘Wish karo to Dish karo’, ‘Ghar Aayee Zindagi’ and the like. And more the dishes, varied are the taste. Of late, I got the opportunity to taste, on television, a few luscious but quality dishes, in the searing summer vacations.

The menu - entertainment, sports, movies, regional and what not! But certainly the English news channels always used to be my soups or starters, or whatever you name! Whether it is UPA-II first year diary or the Maoists menace or the ubiquitous fashionable blasts – things gave me more choices for my appetite.

The main course was always a combination of variety of dishes, from movies to entertainment and often the dance and comedy soap-operas. Out of all these, the dance shows housing the little prodigious children enthralled me the most. I was totally amused to see the energy, flamboyance, enthusiasm, tenacity of these li’l masters thundering on wooden floors. Every nuance was articulated with master’s touch, every expression- be it romance or anguish- was extra-ordinarily reflected, every performance left me speechless.

After a satisfying main-course, I would normally indulge in a minute or two Sport desserts, anticipating June 11 footie Cup, for Team Cricket with all its young blood seems to have rather stuck in blood-donation camp up in Zimbabwe; and in India we only see cheer-girls and belly-dancers kidnapping the minds of our very own IPL rich cricket stars.

  1. I Disagree.

I still haven't come across a channel that provides "proper news" except perhaps the BBC or DD News. When a plane crashes, most channels dramatize the whole presentation, adding music and commentary and big red banners, something that reeks of attempts to get adrenaline racing.
And this is not specific to just India TV, a channel made entirely out of Breaking News and Bhoot-Pret, Bhatki-aatma and Paapi-log.

Dance shows? Absolute waste of time and money, the syntheticity of the expressions on the faces of hosts, the absolute lack of any form of intelligence in the stupid "interactive" audiences in these shows pisses me off.

I'm probably a hardcore cynic, but I KNOW that this dumbs down the viewers and kills free/original/logical thought, turning people into content consumption devices.

  2. @Aditya - I am indeed glad to see such a healthy comment. I shall agree to an extent with you on the hooplas of today's channels. But amidst all the exaggeration and show-offs, you can certainly find elements of authenticity, fun, joy and exhilaration. It is not always intelligent quotient but the emotions that are pivotal. And this epistle was more of a culmination of my emotions for the little children of grace and effort!

Thank You once again for your views and comment :)

  3. Indian Television has come a long way since the days of "Shaktimaan","Mahabharat","Shree Krishna" in terms of quantity but unfortunately the quality has only deteriorated.... we get to see a large no of channels catering to every taste but for me it is too confusing!!! take the case of soap operas-somebody strikes a hit "formula" and everybody else jumps into the bandwagon..
same is true for reality shows. For me the saddest part is the relative success of fake news channels like INDIA TV..they only started introducing sleaze, sex and sensationalism into indian homes...everybody followed and look what has happened to aaj tak, star news, zee news...really sad.
The bottom line is that television journalism has become just another business where TRP matter more than responsible reporting. May be this is the reason I have stopped sitting in front of the IDIOT BOX long time ago and am pursuing much finer things in life..now also when I sit in front of television with my mom and watch soap operas...it pisses me off!!!Look how they are portraying women, religion, society....the great INDIAN CULTURE??? give me a break!!!Sushanto, dude there are a lot of things that I can write here about television, but I am commenting on your blog, not writing another blog...overall the blog has been a good reminder of the current happenings in Indain television..actually I don't get much time to waste on the IDIOT BOX. So keep writing..you write well.
